Healthy Blackberry, Apple & Spinach Smoothie
This smoothie recipe can be enjoyed all year round. Because cold mornings call for warm, nourishing breakfasts and while smoothies are a healthy way to start your day, they're not as appealing when the outside temperature starts to drop.
Smoothies are typically enjoyed cold, and naturally in colder climes we crave hot meals.
But you can still blast your body with some smoothie goodness first thing in the morning, by bringing it up to room temperature without ruining the taste.
In this Healthy Blackberry, Apple & Spinach Smoothie, I've used stewed apple, blanched the frozen blackberries and 220ml of the water content is hot.
I've also added warming spices, like cinnamon and ginger root, as well as some maca powder which is both energising and hormone-balancing.
Maca powder
What's maca you might ask?
Maca is a type of cruciferous vegetable native to the Andes of Peru.
It's a superfood and considered an “adaptogen,” a name given to certain herbs, plants and natural substances that help the body naturally adapt to stressors like a busy schedule or demanding job.
Maca can help increase energy without giving you the “jitters” or a sense of shakiness like high levels of caffeine can.
You can find maca powder at some supermarkets, health food shops and online. Keep it in the fridge for an even longer shelf life.
